Our Story
The idea of The Courage Cottage was planted when we crafted our first bar of Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey soap. Although our first attempt at soap making did not turn out as lovely as we wanted, the finished products were the nicest bars of soap we had ever used and smelled. Maybe it was the excitement of working with oils, which magically (in our minds) made something different. Or the sore arms from mixing to a trace without a hand mixer (and also figuring out what a trace even is). But those brown, very difficult to remove from the molds, and slimy bars of soap cracked open the door to soap making for us. We wouldn’t walk through that door fully for a while, but we had seen and felt the joys of handmade soap and were unable to turn back to normal soap again.
Courage became a core value in our family 14 years ago. My husband was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer and it was anticipated that he had less than a year to live. Two weeks after his diagnosis, my youngest daughter was diagnosed with an auto immune disease. It was assumed that she had two years to live unless going through a series of aggressive treatments. In four short months, my husband taught us how to live courageously by the way he battled his cancer and his fearlessness of the path that was put before him.
Ultimately his victory over cancer was of a different kind, as he stepped out of this life and into his eternal life. My daughter held fast to her courageous spirit as she fought through each treatment and eventually was cured from her immune disorder. During this uncertain and tumultuous time, we held fast to courage and to our faith in God. Every new day brought new challenges, uncertainties, and miracles.
Creating soaps and candles for The Courage Cottage became our way to heal and to stay connected when our family felt adrift and isolated. Now, it gives us a way to share in the stories and support those who are walking a similar path.
